Tag, I’m It! Writing Process Blog Tour.

You know who wrote a book? The awesome Rena Marthaler!

I met her at a reading I did with Lemony Snicket and Lisa Brown. Not only is Rena nine years old and a published author, she also tagged me on this blog tour. Find out more about her book, MAGIC, THE CREST, right here

Want to know who I’m tagging next? Stay tuned until the end. I know. THE SUSPENSE.

What am I working on?
It’s a secret! No really, when I’m working on a new book, I can’t talk about it until it’s ready. But I will say it’s another YA novel, only this time it’s full of sisterhood, Paris, master perfumists, an all-girl band and a bird with special powers. Oh, look! Here’s a mood board. I’m also working on a middle-grade project about extinct animals, as well as a collection of magical short stories for adults.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
It’s a super-secret blend of magic and realism, also called magical realism! Actually, there are a ton of great magical realism books in this genre. But THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is different in that I haven’t seen a shaman panda in literature before, or the idea that a broken heart can make you travel between dimensions. I hope my work is also similar to a lot of other great YA literature, though, with things like great characters, stories with heart, tons of imagination and a little bit of magic.

Why do I write what I do?
I don’t have much of a choice, really. These characters just find me and bug me until I sit down and write their stories. Luckily, these stories dig at deeper truths about the world, humanity, and how we find our way through it, since these are things that interest me.

I love writing stories where everything isn’t what it seems. A world where a broken heart helps you travel to parallel universes? Sign me up! I can’t imagine writing stories without magic in them as well as some aspect of science. In THEORY, it was theoretical physics. In the next one? Ornithology and the science of scent. I love stories that explore science, magic, music, and possibility, which also help us explore ourselves. The connections are endless!

How does my writing process work?
I’m a morning writer. I love to write from dreams, but after being out in the world. So I wake up, walk my dog, Petey Sellers, and then sit down in The Office Aquatic to write for a few hours before switching to my other job. New characters are like new friends; if you want to get to know them and their stories, you have to spend a lot of time with them.

When I’m in first draft mode, I go, go, go until I’m finished. Most of the time I know the beginning scene, the end scene, and a lot of parts along the way.
And then I just sit down and write. I don’t edit while I write, which means I end up with a big, beautiful mess of a first draft. Is it full of gorgeous scenes I’ll probably never use? Yes! But they were fun to write. And more often than not, they teach me things I needed to know, anyway. Then I revise until it’s the most perfect version of the story I can imagine. I also try to have as much fun as possible along the way. I adore research, character playlists, and anything that puts me inside the story. I’ve even been known to dress up like the main character while writing. But that’s okay! She has great taste.

You can look at the playlist for THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, here.

TAG, YOU’RE IT!

I have two friends with great books out: THE CHANGERS by T. Cooper and Allison Glock-Cooper

and THE MOMENT BEFORE by Suzy Vitello.

We’d love to hear about your writing process!
